The research i am conducting will allow me to discover how Jamaican culture came to be. So far i have discovered the slave trade route in which the slaves were transported along as well as what countries they were trading with more frequently.

The English slave trade to Jamaica

The challenges i am running into are finding the cultural similarities between the Jamaican culture and other cultures. The Jamaican slave trade brought them into contact with a vast amount of different cultures. In each of these cultures they had to get accustomed to their norms as well as their beliefs.

A little insight into Jamaica

Jamaican is a very diverse and unique culture unlike any others in the world. The culture has influences from many places in the world. Though predominantly black, about ninety percent, there is also one percent Asian, four percent white, and the other five percent is mixed races.

The research I will be conducting is focused on how the culture of Jamaica came to be. What influenced the rich culture of Jamaica? How did slavery ultimately effect the Jamaican culture? The Jamaican people were exposed to slavery and through the slave trade came in contact with countless different cultures. The cultures that they came in contact with, from what I believe, shaped and helped to form the culture they have today.

Jamaica is the fifth largest island in the Caribbean, Cuba being the first. Jamaica was first settled in 1509 by Juan de Esquivel. The island is 10,999 square kilometers, a rather large island. The population today is estimated at about 2.72 million.    

            The Jamaican culture comes from a mixture of different ethnicity arriving on the island throughout the last couple of centuries. The people arrived on the island for many reasons, mainly through the slave trade. Regardless of how they arrived the Jamaican people’s culture survived and still thrives today. To an outsider the Jamaican culture may seem to be very odd and inappropriate. The Jamaican people are also immersed in their unique music, which is a part of their unique and vibrant culture.
